Why FoodShido?
My mother was born in Japan but moved to the U.S. after marrying my dad in 1951 (yes, they celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2011!). My mom is an outstanding cook and loves to entertain. She taught me the importance of cooking and together with my father (Austrian), the importance of food and culture. I attribute my focus, eclectic palate, adventureness, opinions, experimentation and cultural openness to their love of food. Thanks mom and dad. While thinking of names for this site, the initial thoughts turned to FoodZen, FoodSensei, etc. but my daughter and I believed a more thoughtful approach would be in order. Some liberties are taken, as in any naming process, but the goal was to focus on the mind and art of food. In thinking about the way of the Samurai, ne Bushido, we thought, why not apply that view and discipline to food. |
Shi (士), is an ancient Chinese character for an "official" or an "educated gentleman." Perhaps it can be read as "samurai" in Japanese.
Do (道), is a compound showing an eye, or fully, a head indicating intelligence, and the radical for "motion." It can mean "way" but is primarily a way of living with continual intelligent observation or thought. Or, perhaps, intuition. It is never static or totally defined. (per Wikipedia) Food Shido, then, might be defined as a thoughtful way of fluidily engaging and interacting with food, using both the literary and the arts in progressing ones knowledge and enjoyment of food.
